In an insightful interview, Wilfried Ehrenholz, co-founder and former owner of Dynaudio and now the driving force behind PEAK Loudspeakers, offers a fascinating look at the philosophy, engineering expertise and extraordinary attention to detail behind the Danish high-end loudspeaker manufacturer.
For Ehrenholz, the ultimate objective is not simply technical perfection, but an authentic emotional connection to music:
“My goal is always the same: remove every barrier between the listener and the musical truth. The loudspeaker should disappear, leaving only transparency, dynamic freedom, and a coherent, lifelike soundstage.”
One particularly revealing aspect of the interview is the considerable effort involved in developing a new PEAK loudspeaker. According to Ehrenholz, creating the initial working prototype accounts for only around 20% of the development process. The remaining 80% is devoted to meticulous fine-tuning, combining advanced acoustic measurements, sophisticated simulations, extensive listening sessions and the careful selection of components.
The interview also highlights the close collaboration between three highly experienced specialists: Per Kristoffersen, responsible for cabinet construction and mechanical design; renowned loudspeaker engineer Karl-Heinz Fink, who contributes comprehensive acoustic measurements and analysis; and Wilfried Ehrenholz himself, who oversees development and personally determines the final sonic character of each model.
Discussing the recently introduced SunFyre, positioned just below the flagship Dragon Legacy, Ehrenholz makes clear that expanding the product range is never an end in itself. Instead, PEAK aims to bring its uncompromising approach to musical reproduction into different listening environments without sacrificing the qualities that define the brand.
His philosophy is perhaps best summarised in one statement:
“Peak is driven by passion, not commercial strategies, shareholder expectations, or investor-defined budgets.”
An engaging interview that reveals just how much experience, dedication and painstaking development work goes into creating a PEAK loudspeaker – and why musical authenticity remains the ultimate benchmark.
