Founded in 1983 by Robin Marshall, EPOS continued to surprise the hi-fi world with unconventional loudspeakers. From 1988 to 1999, EPOS was part of the Mordaut Short brand, and for the next 20 years it sailed under the flag of Michael Creek, founder of the famous Creek Audio brand.
In 2020 Karl-Heinz Fink, founder of the German loudspeaker development company FinkTeam and head of the acoustic design consultancy Fink Audio Consulting, acquired the brand. Karl-Heinz Fink had always been interested in the EPOS design philosophy and knew he could update the product ideas with more modern design and construction techniques. In an interview with Robin Marshall in the 1980s, the Epos founder confirmed that he had developed the loudspeakers based on the ideas and know-how he had at the time – no more, no less. That sounded like the Fink Audio way – pushing boundaries, not copying the past. At High End 2022, EPOS will unveil the first of the new generation of loudspeakers.
For the relaunch of EPOS, Karl-Heinz Fink and his team developed a new edition of Epos’ most famous loudspeaker at the time, the ES-14. This classic 2-way loudspeaker had a comparatively large cabinet and was mounted on a special stand.
The new ES-14N has almost the same cabinet volume as the original model, but has been completely redesigned. The bass reflex enclosure is a double-layered MDF construction bonded with the latest generation of damping glue. Additional internal bracing prevents unwanted cabinet vibration.
The rear-facing baffle houses a 180 mm (7″) polypropylene cone bass/midrange driver and a 28 mm (1″) dome tweeter. The high rigidity cone is made from an aluminium alloy with an additional ceramic coating, and the voice coil has no ferrofluid cooling.
The optional stands are made of two steel plates and four layers of wood, glued together in the same way as the cabinets.
