At the end of February 2026, the very first review of the new Canor components from the Foundation Line appears on lite-magazin.de. The Virtus I4S integrated amplifier and the Verto D4S D/A converter win over the editorial team across the board: “two beautifully designed, versatile, and sonically powerful hi-fi gems.”
“What you notice immediately is the Canor combo’s punchy bass reproduction. The kick drum surges forward quickly and forcefully, while the rest of the percussion is thrown into the room with brisk attacks and solid impact. The bass line itself remains somewhat in the background, yet still sounds pleasantly three-dimensional and precisely plucked. The spatial rendering of the CD rip is also quite remarkable here, especially when drums and keyboards sweep across the wide soundstage in almost wave-like fashion, with impressive body. […]
With the ‘Metal Gear Solid 3 Main Theme’ by Harry Gregson-Williams, the wonderfully tight rendering of the percussion once again draws exclamations. At the same time, the DAC and amplifier do not hold back on finely resolved high-frequency effects or bright flute tones, while huge taiko drums plunge powerfully into the bass depths. […]
Switching to immensely high-resolution DSD tracks, Canor’s tube-free combination raises its game even further. ‘Magnificat: Et Misericordia’ features a clearly struck piano accompanied by silky-soft strings. Lisa Granden Berg’s powerful voice dominates the center of the stage, remaining nuanced and consistently clear even in the treble range. […]
When moving from audiophile sound art to solid rock, however, clear preferences of the Canor combo emerge. While bass and percussion retain their wonderfully punchy character, fast electric guitars lack a bit of contour and transparency. The quality of the mastering also plays a role here, as the DAC and amplifier are rather unforgiving.
Issues that Rodrigo y Gabriela’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ does not suffer from. Here, Verto and Virtus make the energetically plucked and struck strings practically tangible. The sudden impulse of first contact is followed by a fairly long decay, giving the briskly played acoustic guitars a beautiful timbre. Despite its slim appearance, the integrated amplifier has no trouble driving and controlling fairly large three-way floorstanding speakers. Its power delivery is equally impressive. Even at higher volumes, there is ample headroom, and the level can be adjusted pleasantly precisely and linearly. This means you can really turn things up with Howard Shore’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ soundtrack, when large drums thunder forward and mighty brass fanfares soar skyward. The combo also delivers clearly delineated string sections and consistently imposing dynamics with a lively drive that quickly makes you forget the absence of glowing tubes.”
Conclusion
Canor’s Foundation Line replaces tubes and bulk with transistors and living-room compatibility. The concept works. With the Verto D4S DAC and the Virtus I4S integrated amplifier, Canor delivers two beautifully designed, versatile, and sonically powerful hi-fi gems. While the dual-mono DAC extracts the very best from high-resolution and well-mastered material, the amplifier ensures an engaging performance with powerful dynamics, clear impulse response, and ample drive. In addition, both units are well equipped, offer practical features, and can be conveniently operated via their touchscreens. The look and build quality of both components are once again at a top level. Anyone looking to enjoy Canor’s qualities in a compact space will be in excellent hands with the Foundation Line components.
