Epos ES-7N: What Hi-Fi? Award 2025 in the £1,500-£2,500 bookshelf speaker category

Every November, the time comes: the leading British hi-fi magazine What Hi-Fi? announces its Products of the Year. In 2025, in the £1,500–2,500 bookshelf speaker category, the winner is: the Epos ES-7N.

“The Epos ES-7N are compact charmers with big capabilities. The 29 cm tall cabinets are superbly built and consist of two layers of 8 mm MDF, separated by a highly effective damping material. The tweeters feature a 28 mm ceramic-coated aluminium dome, while below 2 kHz, a front-ported 13 cm polypropylene mid/bass driver filled with mica takes over.

Thanks to the injection-moulded diaphragm, Epos had considerable freedom to fine-tune the profile and thickness for the desired performance. In addition, the mid/bass driver includes a dual magnet motor to control stray fields and increase the force on the voice coil.

Being relatively small speakers, they can’t match larger models in terms of bass weight, overall scale, or dynamic range. However, they do so much so well that we hardly mind the compromises. The ES-7N are powerful and confident speakers, delivering a high level of detail in a coherent and musical way.

They sound tight and punchy, delivering rhythm tracks with great assurance. Considering they are small speakers with a mid-sized mid/bass unit, it’s surprising how solid and full they sound in the lower frequencies.”

They may not go as deep as some others, but they sound controlled and firmly grounded. Sonically, the ES-7N have a smooth, surprisingly full-bodied balance.

With careful placement and a top-quality signal, they deliver a performance that’s good enough to challenge even the best alternatives in this class. But even when conditions are less than ideal, they still impress. That’s a rare trait, and one we especially want to highlight here.”
