The Dutch online magazine hifi.nl tested the new Canor Virtus I4S and Verto D4S amplifier/DAC combination in June 2026:
“Despite its slim design, the Virtus I4S features a power supply with considerable reserves, including an impressive 40,000 µF per channel in capacitors to handle current peaks. And it works, because when a brief, violent outburst occurs in ‘Stormy, fast and very fierce’ from Wagner’s Die Walküre, the soundstage does not actually collapse. It is handled extremely competently, whether a horn suddenly sounds or the cello dives deep into the notes, including beautifully decaying tones. This is certainly not a pale reproduction; there is emotion here. The Class AB technology used ensures a properly crisp sound.
One might perhaps expect a company like Canor, which is so heavily involved in tube amplifiers, to aim for a ‘tube sound’ with the Virtus I4S. That is not the case, however: the Canor amplifier is quite balanced in terms of sound, with only a slight warmth to create a pleasant atmosphere. But then again, that is actually true of the tube models as well.
Since I received the Verto D4S and the Virtus I4S together, it made sense to consider them as a system. But of course, that does not have to be the case. The Virtus I4S is also very interesting as a standalone amplifier. It is a fully analogue design, so only analogue sources can be connected.
The fact that the Virtus I4S has a phono input suitable for both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges is already quite unusual in this price class. However, Canor – which has itself been building phono preamplifiers for years – goes one step further. The load values can also be adjusted via the remote control, something that is rarely possible with an integrated amplifier.
Conclusion
With the Verto D4S and the Virtus I4S, Canor presents a combination that, despite a different technical basis, fits perfectly with the Slovakian brand’s often more expensive tube devices. The DAC is versatile and sounds lively and pleasant, while the Virtus amplifier also brings several strong assets to the table. The integrated phono amplifier is particularly worth highlighting.”
Both devices have a great deal to offer not only musically; the Foundation design is also a real eye-catcher. At the same time, the slimline look is modern and minimalist, and the build quality is first-class, giving these devices a touch of luxury in the living room. The design attracts attention through its individuality, but that does not mean that sound quality has taken second place.
