Epos ES-7N: 5-star review and “highly recommended” by What Hi-Fi?

The leading British Hi-Fi magazine What Hi-Fi? tested the Epos ES-7N compact speakers in early October 2024, awarding them consistent top marks and 5 stars:

“These speakers are relatively small and therefore do not reach the deep bass and dynamics of larger models. But they do so much right that these limitations don’t really bother us. The ES-7N are confident speakers with good detail resolution and a coherent, musical sound image. […]

Considering that these compact speakers have only a 130 mm mid-bass driver, it’s surprising how solid and full-bodied they sound at low frequencies. They may not dig as deep as some competitors, but they sound more controlled and gripping.

With Michael Giacchino’s ‘It’s Raining Vengeance’ from the Batman soundtrack, the Epos prove that they are capable of reproducing the broad dynamics and ominous feeling of the music exceptionally well. The stereo reproduction is spacious and precise, although the angle of the speakers to the listening position must be meticulously chosen.

[…]

Sound-wise, the ES-7N have a smooth, surprisingly full-bodied balance. While they reveal weaknesses in the setup and recordings, they are refined enough never to overextend. This means that they can achieve good results even with modest electronics, as our experience with the budget-friendly Rotel A8 integrated amplifier proves. If you use [high-quality amplifiers and streamers], the Epos shine even brighter. Make no mistake, these compact Epos offer a wealth of sonic possibilities.”

Verdict

All in all, the Epos ES-7N are true charmers. They are small, extremely powerful, and surprisingly easy to use. With careful positioning and a top-notch signal, they deliver outstanding sound, good enough to challenge the best alternatives at this level. Even under less-than-ideal conditions, the Epos still sound excellent. This is a rare talent that deserves to be celebrated. Highly recommended.
