Epos ES-7N: Hi-Fi System Recommendation by What Hi-Fi?

In its February 2026 issue, the British specialist magazine What Hi-Fi? recommends several special Hi-Fi systems, all assembled from top-rated components – including one system consisting of:

• the Rega Planar 6 turntable with Nd7 cartridge (approx. €2,000),
• the Arcam ST25 streamer (approx. €1,400),
• the Arcam A15+ integrated amplifier (approx. €1,400),
• and the compact Epos ES-7N speakers (approx. €2,000).

What Hi-Fi? summarizes: “This brilliant system is highly capable and surprisingly straightforward to use”:

“Six and a half thousand euros is a lot of money. But think about what you’re getting for it. And by ‘what you’re getting,’ we mean the many, many years of joy these devices will bring you as they work together to deliver the music you love in a quality that is simply unmatched at this price.

This is the level where performance leaps from good to truly great, without crossing the line into outright extravagance. This system blends the joy of vinyl listening with the modern convenience of hi-res streaming. It routes its analogue and digital signals through a remarkably powerful integrated stereo amplifier and a pair of compact yet powerful speakers. The result is a wonderfully balanced, clear, and expressive Hi-Fi package.”

The speakers in this quartet are the compact Epos ES-7N bookshelf models, winners of two awards. They have a clever trick up their sleeve to deliver optimal sound regardless of placement. On the back of the ES-7N is a toggle switch – flicking it upward sets the speakers to a so-called semi-free position, ideal when placed on 70 cm-high stands and 30 to 50 cm away from the rear wall. Pushing the switch downward boosts the mid and high frequencies relative to the bass, resulting in a surprisingly balanced sound if the speakers are placed directly in front of a wall or inside a bookshelf.

Being relatively small speakers, they naturally can’t compete with larger rivals in terms of bass weight, depth, and dynamics. However, they deliver enough performance that these limitations aren’t truly bothersome. The ES-7N are powerful and confident speakers, reproducing a high level of detail in a coherent and musical manner. It’s surprising how solid and full they sound in the low frequencies. And while their bass doesn’t reach as deep as some competitors, it’s more controlled and tactile than many others.

The Epos are delivered in mirror-imaged pairs, and we experimented with placement, initially positioning the tweeters on the inner edge, then on the outer edge. We found that placing the tweeters on the inside yields more solid and focused results. Our test verdict: “The Epos ES-7N are small, extremely capable, and surprisingly easy to use.”
